Murt Brophy
Tuesday, 10 June 2008 09:17

It was with deep regret that the town of Athy learned of the recent sudden passing of Martin Brophy. Martin, or Murt as he was affectionately known, was well known and regarded throughout the Athy community and will be missed by all those who knew him.
Born and reared in Athy, Martin was involved in the family pub business in Duke Street for many years and more recently worked in Athy International Concentrates.
Martin spent much of his spare time at Athy rugby club where he gave a lifetime’s service. Throughout his involvement with the club he was a player, referee and administrator. As a player he captained Athy RFC 3rd XV to win the famous Anderson Cup, the first time Athy won the trophy. He held the position of President of the club on a number of occasions and was a committee member for many years where he served as Chairman, Honorary Secretary and most recently Fixtures Secretary, a position he held at the time of his death.
Martin was also widely known and regarded throughout the rugby community in Leinster through his involvement with the North Midlands Area committee and the Leinster Branch IRFU where he served for a time as Chairman of the Junior committee and as a member of the Senior Executive committee.
Involved with Athy RFC right up to the time of his death Martin was a regular sight at matches, home and away, and afterwards in the clubhouse. A man of few words but one who was always listened to when he gave guidance and encouragement to others.
Martin was also known for his involvement in activities supporting the Dominican community in Athy. He worked at the Monday night Bingo for many years and could be seen most Saturday evenings distributing the collection plate during mass.
To his wife Kathleen, his son Martin Junior, his sisters Carmel and Stephanie and all his family and friends we extend our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh a h-anam.
Mark Bergin
President, Athy RFC
